Living in the opposite sex in Southern Spain

This ethnographic research explores the life-worlds of trans people in Andalusia, Southern Spain. It mainly draws on the experiences, memories and doings of male-to-female (MtF) and female-to-male (FtM) trans persons of different age groups and social background, but also of family members and different professional actors (physicians, social workers). Insights in their life-worlds reveal preceding and ongoing political, societal and cultural transformations, thus touching issues leading back to the repressive situation during the dictatorship of Franco to contemporary endeavours and achievements regarding acceptance, citizenship and self-determination in times of neoliberalism. Furthermore, in following a phenomenological approach, it discusses issues regarding conceptions of the body, of sex and gender.
