Lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals often face overt discrimination and violence for challenging traditional gender roles in heteronormative societies. However, a less visible yet equally harmful form of discrimination—ostracism, or being excluded and ignored—remains underexplored.

This talk — held by Christine Büttner — delves into how LGB individuals experience higher rates of ostracism compared to their straight counterparts, particularly when they defy gender norms. The findings suggest that ostracism is not just a social slight but a significant, discriminatory experience rooted in societal expectations of gender conformity that can add to the marginalization of sexual minorities.

Christiane Büttner is Postdoc-Researcher in Social Psychology at the University of Basel and holds this talk on November 26 in the frame of the Gender Studies Graduate Program Basel.
