The symposium, organised by the Swiss Society for Gender Studies (SGGF) and hosted by the Centre for Gender Studies at the University of Basel, the Department of Islamic Studies at the Institute of Asian and Oriental Studies, and the Department of Gender Studies at the University of Zurich, focused on the controversial topic of the family. The focus was on concepts, policies and practices relating to the family within the complex interplay of gender, kinship, the state and society – from both historical and contemporary, as well as national and transnational, perspectives. International keynote speeches and interdisciplinary panels explored issues surrounding the family, generativity, regulation and social arrangements, linking theoretical debates with practical perspectives drawn from gender equality work and family policy.
