SUMMARY:SeminBar: Gender equality in science - why is it taking so long?
DESCRIPTION:The SeminBar is held at SUD in Basel in English and starts at 6
pm. It is open to the public. Accompanying the talk is a live music act\,
a buffet dinner and drinks at the bar. Free entrance!\\r\\n\\r\\nGender
equality in science: why is it taking so long?\\r\\nPaul Walton\, Departm
ent of Chemistry\, University of York\, UK \\r\\nOver nearly all scientif
ic organisations\, across every country and across time one finds that the
progression of women in research/academia is significantly hindered when
compared to men.  Such a universal truth represents an enormous loss of t
alent\, including in our very own bioinorganic community.\\r\\nRecent year
s have seen some progress in understanding the principal factors behind th
is phenomenon and there has been some progress in new schemes which are de
signed to address the lack of women in senior scientific positions. These
schemes have also met with some resistance which\, in itself\, has been re
vealing of the reasons why there is such a difference in the progression r
ates of men and women in science. This presentation discusses some of thos
e resistances: why they arise\; what they reveal about gender (in)equality
  in our universities\, laboratories\, groups\; and—most importantly—wh
at can be done about them.\\r\\nLink [https://www.nccr-mse.ch/en/events/se
