Unsustainable inclusion: A Black feminist critique of democracy
From a Black feminist perspective, the afterlives of colonialism and slavery are central for understanding current challenges to democratic life within Western European contexts. I explore how these afterlives affect the political voice of subjects marked by gendered-racialized difference. Bodily dispossession and spectacularization, as well as voice-containment and distortion, hinder subaltern subjects’ audibility and the responsiveness of communities in which those subjects are located. The Black feminist critique of democracy that emerges from this account sheds light on violent and often neglected processes that lead to unsustainable inclusion and forces us to think strategies for amplifying voices and opening ears.
